Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a chiropodist or podiatrist?
You do not need a referral to book an appointment with a chiropodist or podiatrist in Ontario. Some insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, but the clinical visit itself does not. Please go to FAQs page or the Orthotics FAQs page
What is the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist in Ontario?
Ontario is unique in how it distinguishes these titles. Both are regulated foot specialists, but the title and scope depend on where and when the practitioner was trained. US‑trained podiatrists licensed before July 1993 have an expanded scope that includes forefoot bone surgery; all others use the title chiropodist. This regulatory nuance is a major source of public confusion
Is foot care covered by OHIP?
Routine chiropody and podiatry services are not covered by OHIP. Private insurance often covers assessments, treatments, and custom orthotics, but coverage varies by plan. This is one of the most frequently searched questions because patients often assume foot care is treated like physiotherapy or physician services. Please visit our FAQs page
