Ankle foot orthosis (AFO)

Ankle‑Foot Orthosis (AFO) — Custom Bracing in Whitby

We provide custom ankle‑foot orthoses (AFOs) in Whitby to support weak muscles, stabilize the ankle and subtalar joint, improve gait efficiency, and reduce pain. AFOs are prescribed for conditions such as drop foot, adult‑acquired flatfoot, arthritis, neuromuscular disorders, and post‑injury immobilization.

What Is an Ankle‑Foot Orthosis (AFO)?

An ankle‑foot orthosis (AFO) is an L‑shaped brace that surrounds the ankle and part of the foot. It is externally applied and can be made from metal, plastic, leather, synthetic fabrics, or a combination of materials. AFOs are designed to support, stabilize, or control motion in the ankle and lower leg.

Indications for an AFO

AFOs are prescribed to:

  • Control ankle position
  • Compensate for muscle weakness (e.g., drop foot)
  • Support neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, polio, multiple sclerosis, and peripheral neuropathy
  • Immobilize the ankle/lower leg in arthritis or fracture
  • Stabilize the ankle and subtalar joint in adult‑acquired flatfoot
  • Enhance normal ankle movement
  • Minimize abnormal gait patterns
  • Increase walking efficiency

Types of AFO’s

Static AFO

A static AFO is a flexible or rigid L‑shaped brace with an upright portion behind the calf and a lower portion under the foot. It is used to:

  • Support weakened or paralyzed limbs (e.g., drop foot after stroke)
  • Provide dorsiflexion assistance (flexible version)
  • Block ankle movement and stabilize the subtalar joint (rigid version)
  • Control forefoot adduction/abduction

Dynamic AFO (Articulated)

A dynamic AFO uses a hinge to allow controlled ankle motion. It is designed to:

  • Facilitate natural movement

  • Provide subtalar stabilization

  • Allow free dorsiflexion

  • Allow free or restricted plantarflexion

  • Treat adult‑acquired flatfoot

  • Provide dorsiflexion assistance for foot drop (depending on hinge type)

Custom vs. Over‑the‑Counter AFOs

AFOs may be:

  • Over‑the‑counter (prefabricated)
  • Custom‑made from a negative cast or 3D laser scan of the foot and lower leg

Custom AFOs provide superior fit, comfort, and biomechanical control.
