Instrument Sterilization

Instrument Sterilization in Whitby: Safe, Medical‑Grade Standards for Every Patient

Your safety depends on proper sterilization. At Whitby Family Footcare Clinic, every instrument that touches your skin or nails is fully sterilized using hospital‑grade autoclave technology. This ensures that tools such as clippers, files, probes, and scissors are completely free of bacteria, viruses, and fungal organisms before each use. You will always see a freshly opened sterile pouch at the start of your appointment.

Why Sterilization Matters in Footcare

Footcare instruments come into direct contact with skin, nails, and sometimes small areas of broken tissue. Without proper sterilization, microorganisms can transfer between patients. Autoclaving is the only proven method to eliminate bacteria, fungal spores, and viruses on metal instruments.

Our Sterilization Process

Your clinic follows a multi‑step, medical‑grade protocol that exceeds standard infection‑control guidelines.

1. Ultrasonic Cleaning

Instruments are placed in an ultrasonic bath that removes debris from grooves, hinges, and crevices—areas that manual scrubbing cannot reach.

2. Autoclave Packaging

After cleaning, instruments are sealed in autoclave envelopes. Each pouch contains a colour‑changing indicator that confirms successful sterilization.

  • At our clinic, the indicator turns from pink to brown when sterilization is complete.

3. Autoclave Sterilization

Instruments are sterilized under high pressure and high‑temperature steam, the gold standard used in hospitals and surgical centres.

4. Biological Testing for Safety

We routinely run biological indicator tests using sealed vials containing bacteria.

  • After autoclaving, the vial is incubated for 24 hours.

  • If the bacteria survive, the vial changes colour—indicating the autoclave needs service. This ensures our sterilization equipment is functioning at the highest standard.

5. Monthly Autoclave Maintenance

Our autoclaves are professionally maintained every month to ensure consistent performance and patient safety.

Why We Never Use Chemical Soaking Alone

Chemical disinfectants cannot reliably kill fungal spores or certain bacteria. For this reason, soaking instruments is not considered a safe or complete sterilization method. Autoclaving is the only method that guarantees full microbial elimination.

What You Can Expect at Your Appointment

At the start of every visit, you will see your clinician open a new sterile pouch of instruments right in front of you. This ensures complete transparency and peace of mind.
